Redmi K20 Pro Premium Review and Features

The Xiaomi Redmi K20 has only been available since the middle of 2019 but the Chinese smartphone maker has already launched a bigger and better version called the Redmi K20 Pro Premium. Both use Android 9 and have the same 1080 x 2340 pixels 6.39-inch displays but the Pro has upgraded processor and RAM. The latest device is powered by an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 Plus SoC. Users will notice the slightly faster GPU compared to the Snapdragon 855 but the 12GB RAM and up to 512GB of internal storage make the real difference.

Additional Memory

The Redmi K20 Pro Premium is available in three specs. The basic device has 8GB RAM and 128GB of internal storage. The second comes with 8GB RAM and 512GB of memory. You also get 512GB of storage space with the 12GB RAM version. Make sure you know how much memory you will need and even then, consider whether you can afford the next model in the range as this Xiaomi device doesn't allow for external memory cards.

If you like to take loads of pictures on your phone, you'll love the triple camera set up on the back on the device. The main 48-megapixel sensor is enhanced with two others: a 13-megapixel wide-angle sensor and a third 8-megapixel telephoto sensor. And there's a 20-megapixel selfie camera that pops up from the top of the case. All four cameras produce clear photos in all types of light and the phone manages edge detection well.

This is Redmi's flagship phone so expect a premium feel. There's a 91.9% screen-to-body ratio which would make the phone vulnerable if dropped but the Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection on the front and back of the device help it resist the sort of wear it will receive from daily use.

Operating System

The K20 runs MIUI 10 over Android 9 Pie. The user interface has some great features but expect to see a lot of notifications throughout the day. Thankfully those notifications won't wear down the 4,000mAh battery too much. Xiaomi says that the phone has a day and a half's battery life when it's used for normal daily activities like calling, texting, watching videos and browsing.

Can You Buy One?

Having read this review, you might be tempted to buy a new phone from abroad and have it shipped to the US as it won't be able to get a Redmi device from any US-based cellphone networks. Before you do buy one, you'll need to know a little about cellphones. Although phones operate on the LTE standard today when they run 4G, they must also be capable of running on GSM or CDMA when they need to access 3G or 2G networks. You should opt for an unlocked European phone as it will most likely work on GSM networks including AT&T, Cricket Wireless, MetroPCS, and T-Mobile.

To Consider Before Your Purchase

You should also consider buying the Huawei Mate 30.

Our Notes

  • The cameras are very versatile
  • The phone’s 4K video quality could be better.
  • The front camera pop-up mechanism is slow to react.
