The Best Laptop for Working from Home

The Best Laptop for Working from Home

Whether you're a full or part-time remote worker, you'll need the best laptop for working from home. No matter your job, the computer needs a high-resolution screen, a reliable keyboard and mouse, and fast enough hardware to run multiple applications. Aside from that, the laptop's specs will depend on the job you need it for. A freelance writer won't need the sort of processor an engineer will need, so the first things we need to consider are the specs.

Apple MacBook Air M1

The robust design and elegant aesthetics aren't the only reasons to buy the Apple MacBook Air M1. In terms of its specs, it's closer to the minimum than the recommended numbers, but this laptop's a lot less expensive than the others featured here. Is it the best laptop for working from home? We're not so sure. The keyboard's not the best on offer, and there are no Ethernet ports. This mid-range machine is suitable for most clerical workers but might not offer enough for anyone running memory-sapping applications.

  • CPU 8-Core Apple M1 Chip

  • RAM 8GB

  • Storage 256GB SSD

  • Display 13.3-inch FHD Retina (2560 x 1600)

  • GPU Integrated Apple 7-core

  • Battery Up to 18 hours

HP Envy

The HP Envy has been built with the environment in mind. Sustainable materials like ocean-bound plastic have been used in the bezel, frame, and speaker enclosures. The keyboard deck is made from recycled aluminum, and the keycaps are made from recycled plastic. This is the best laptop for working from home. You can judge that yourself when you read through the specs. The RAM is a little lower than we'd recommend, but the display's larger, and you can expect up to 10 hours of battery life.

  • CPU 2.8GHz Intel Core i7-1165G7

  • RAM 12GB

  • Storage 512GB SSD + 32GB Optane

  • Display 17.3-inch FHD Touch (‎1920 x 1080)

  • GPU Integrated ‎Intel Iris Xe

  • Battery Up to 10 hours

Minimum System Requirements

The following is the minimum spec you should consider for working from home. Bear in mind how long you want to keep your laptop because buying the minimum spec machine normally leaves you needing a new one before too long.

  • CPU 8th Gen Intel Core i3

  • RAM 8GB

  • Storage 256GB SSD

  • Display 12.3-inch PixelSense (2736 x 1824)

  • GPU Integrated Intel HD 620

Battery Up to 5 hours

Two very important specs are easily overlooked as most buyers concentrate on memory. The display size and the machine's battery life can be the most important specs. If you don't link up to a separate monitor or move around from place to place when working remotely, you might need more than the minimum.

Recommended System Requirements

Now let's look at the specs you should aim for. You'll need to find a few more dollars, but the investment will be worth it.

  • CPU 10th Gen Intel Core i7

  • RAM 16GB

  • Storage 512GB SSD

  • Display 15.6-inch FHD IPS (1920 x 1080)

  • GPU 2GB NVIDIA GeForce MX350

  • Battery Up to 8 hours

You'll have a larger screen and more battery life with this spec machine. Those numbers are pretty straightforward. More importantly, you'll have twice the storage and twice the RAM. A newer generation Intel processor and better GPU will provide superior performance.

LG Gram 14

The LG Gram 14 is a portable and powerful device. It's the best laptop if you need to carry your machine around because of its low weight. But that's not the reason we're recommending it. We like the 16/10 aspect ratio display as it offers a little more at the top and bottom of the display. The fingerprint scanner is another great feature. It's an important one in this era of data protection. Its webcam is not the best, but it's functional, and the laptop's speakers aren't high spec. This machine's excellent for work and taking around, but it's not the best if you also want to use it to watch TV in your downtime.

  • CPU 1.3GHz Intel Core i7-1065G7

  • RAM 16GB

  • Storage 512GB SSD

  • Display 14-inch FHD IPS (1920 x 1080)

  • GPU Integrated Intel Iris Plus

  • Battery Up to 18.5 hours
