American Car Brands Ranked from the Worst to Best

A car's not just a convenient mode of transport. It reflects our personalities when we finally have the money to buy a car we want. The brands we're attracted to show us something about ourselves. If we choose American only, is that a show of patriotism or just convenience? Maybe we buy Fords or Chevys because that's what our parents drove. Whatever the reason to buy American, you need to know the worst American cars so you can avoid them. It also pays to have some idea of who makes the best American cars.

Chrysler is one of the "big three" car makers in the US, but bigger isn't always better. The Chrysler brand doesn't evoke much emotion. They're not the guys who brought us the Mustang or the Corvette. Instead, we have Chrysler to blame for creating the minivan. Unless you're a soccer mom or dad, avoid Chrysler. You don't need to take our word for it. Check out their performance on the ACSI Automobile Study 2020-2021. They got the lowest score overall, and that score was lower than they achieved the year before, so they're tracking downwards. The Chrysler 300 is a fair car but avoid all others as they're some of the worst American cars of all time.

Ford's luxury brand has never really rivaled Cadillac, and it shows no sign of rivaling anyone (except Chrysler). Customers expect more than Lincoln can provide, but they're right to demand more. This is supposed to be a luxury brand, but Lincoln is consistently near the bottom of all consumer ratings. The Lincoln Aviator is a good example of a bad car. According to Consumer Reports, owners are reporting issues with the instrument cluster and infotainment systems. The problems they're reporting about the car's keyless entry system shouldn't be an issue. If the car's not letting you in, that's a good thing when you own a Lincoln.

Jeep cars are made by the same people responsible for Chrysler. Stellantis is the sixth biggest car producer globally, but they're not responsible for the most desirable or the highest quality cars. Aside from the Wrangler and the JL EcoDiesel, Jeep doesn't make good cars. At least they have a fairly unique product in the American marketplace. The same can't be said for the following brand on our list.

Chevrolet hasn't changed their rating or their position on the list from 2020, but that's not a good thing. For every Camaro and Corvette, there is a Malibu or a Spark. The Malibu is the car equivalent of your boring old uncle who laughs at his own jokes. Like him, it's got nothing new to offer. And the Spark is mini car that's not made for American roads. The Silverado's a great car, but it's not in the same league as the F-150. And if you're looking to go electric, the Bolt is not the car to go for.

Cadillac's not the last word in luxury, but they have a good range of cars. The CT5-V is a sedan packed with power and performance, so the owners surveyed probably didn't have one of those. They probably drive the CT4 or an Escalade or an older model.

Your granddad won't agree with this, but Buick's one of the worst American brands. The problem with the brand itself is trying to figure out what it represents. Is Buick a luxury brand? They only make SUVs and don't have any iconic cars or any special nameplates. Does GM keep the brand alive because it still grabs the attention of the older generation who fondly recall the Regal, or is it because the brand sells well overseas? At the moment, the Chinese market takes most of Buick's sales.

GMC's lineup of SUVs and trucks isn't very inspiring because we've seen them all before. We're not kidding. What's the difference between the GMC Sierra and the Chevy Silverado? Well, there's no real difference at all, but GM expects drivers to pay more for the GMC model. Why is that? It's a similar story when you look at the Yukon and Tahoe. Again, the GMC model is more expensive, although it comes with a few extra luxuries. As with Buick, the question GM needs to ask themselves is what is the point of this brand?

Ford has let itself down in recent years with quality issues. The Lincoln Aviator that we mentioned before isn't much more than a Ford Explorer, so drivers of the Explorer have also had problems with keyless entry, the instrument cluster, and the car's infotainment system. We can forgive Ford, though, as they produce the F-150 and the Mustang and the Bronco, some of the best American cars available. Thankfully, they no longer sell the Fusion. In fact, they don't sell any sedans, and the Mustang is the only vehicle listed in the car category. They have a great range of vehicles and a strong brand that people know they can rely on. That's why they're the best American brand at the moment.
