There are a lot of great reasons why you should wait and get a PS5, which launches in the US in 2020, and there are an equal amount of reasons why the PS4 is worth buying. The PS4 is a great machine and Sony hasn't yet confirmed when exactly the latest generation machine will hit the market. We're sure it will be released in 2020 but what if it's during the last quarter of the year? That's too long for any gamer to wait so let's look at the reasons to buy a PS4 and the reasons to wait for the PS5.
PS5 Launch Date
The most important piece of the puzzle is missing. Until gamers know when the PS5 will be released, they won't want to wait for it if they don't have access to a PS4. So far, it sounds like Sony will release the PS5 during 2020 but we can't be sure of which month. If it's in line with the last two major launches, it will be released on November 15, which was the date the PS4 and PS4 Pro were launched. If that's true, pre-orders will be available from May or June 2020. The fact that you can't already pre-order the PS5 is a pretty big clue that it won't be released during the first quarter of 2020.
Let's make the argument for waiting first. It's not a difficult one to make when you see the specs. In an exclusive interview with Wired, Sony revealed that the key feature is no loading time, which is possible thanks to impressive specs. Wired were shown a PS4 Pro which took 15 seconds to load Spider-Man. Sony then showed the PS5 and the same load took 0.8 seconds. That's more than 15 times quicker than the existing machine.
The controller for the new machine is just as impressive. The new controller has haptic feedback rather than rumble which means players will really feel what it's like to move through water or to take the bumps of a race track. There's a better speaker in the controller too, and game developers can now adjust the resistance of the trigger to add tension whenever they want to within a game. The new machine has been future-proofed by Sony. It will play on 8K TVs, but it can also be downscale to run on 4K and 1080P screens.
You will be able to play all the PS4 games on the new device so if you opt for a PS4, you won't be wasting your money on games you'll have to shelve when you step up to the PS5. But that's not the main reason to buy a PS4. The cost of the new machine will be high. Maybe as much as $499. You can buy the PS4 for $299 at the moment. If you look around, you'll get an even better deal and the games are also cheap. This is a machine that's been on the market since 2013 so games and accessories are at a low price.
PS4 Pro Specs
The PS4 is an impressive machine. The PS4 Pro features a 4.2 teraflops AMD Radeon-based graphics card, 8GB GDDR5 RAM and 1TB storage and it offers 4K resolution. The PS4 only offers 1080P. It's more powerful and looks more impressive than the standard machine, which is basically the same machine that was sold in 2013, albeit in a slimmer case. Although that's all true, if you need a machine now, buy the PS4 Pro. If you already have the PS4, wait till 2020 and buy the latest one.
To Consider Before Your Purchase
If you’re worried about the price of the PS5, also think about how much you’ll get for your current console when you sell it to make space for the new PlayStation.
- Buy a refurbished PS4 if you want to play now but you don’t want to invest a lot of money.
- Look for offers on eBay Daily Deals or similar promotions and save money on the PS4 that way.
