When you think high end mobile phones, you might immediately think of products from Apple, Samsung and other relatively old phone makers. Now, a new game is in town, thanks to upstart phone maker OnePlus. Operating largely below the radar and barely a five-year-old company, OnePlus is finally breaking into the mainstream. The company has enjoyed great success in India but is a newcomer to the US market. Its launch of the OnePlus 7 in May 2019 provides big reasons to take a look at a OnePlus phone.
Look and Feel
The OnePlus 7 sports a glossy aluminum frame and a 6.41 inch screen with a small space at the top for the camera. Its large screen gives ample display room for everything from full-screen gaming to taking pictures. Weighing just 6.02 ounces or 182 grams, the OnePlus 7 weighs about the same as the iPhone XS. The phone’s dual 48MP ultrashot camera will enable you to take high definition photos and videos with up to 2160p definition.
OxygenOS and Snapdragon 855
Besides an elegant design, the OnePlus 7 features some impressive internals. The most significant of its qualities in this regard is the Snapdragon 855 system-on-a-chip. This is a mobile computing platform from world leader Qualcomm that is based on the 7 nm process. It results in some of the fastest processing possible on a mobile phone. Everything from opening apps to gaming is faster. The OnePlus 7 boasts a unique operating system, OxygenOS, based on Android. Use of the Snapdragon 855 lets OxygenOS shine.
The OnePlus 7 is available in two configurations. Both have the same mirror-gray color and specs, except for RAM as well as storage. The 6GB RAM, 128GB storage variant sells for £499, which is around $640. Meanwhile, the 8GB RAM, 256GB variant costs £549 or about $699. While the OnePlus 7 is not officially provided by a US-based carrier, you may buy one from third parties. You can also upgrade to the OnePlus 7 Pro, which boasts similar specs and has been launched in the US by T-Mobile. OnePlus launched the OnePlus 7 in the UK and other European countries earlier in 2019.
Why You Will Want the OnePlus 7
Besides price alone, the OnePlus 7 is a compelling deal. It costs about $100 less than the cheapest iPhone XR and more than $300 than the cheapest iPhone XS. On the other hand, it packs more storage and impressive specs. The Snapdragon 855 is a high end system that will give you a standout mobile experience for years to come. Other phones that use it, such as the Samsung Galaxy S10 and S10+, will cost you more. Meanwhile, the OnePlus 7 makes few, if any, compromises.
To Consider Before Your Purchase
You may purchase the OnePlus 7 unlocked but will need to check if official carrier support is available for your mobile plan provider. OnePlus struck a deal with T-Mobile in 2018 but is still rolling out its official US support.
