It took multiple cracks at the high-end segment of the market but it looks like Huawei has finally produced a smartphone that can challenge the incumbents. For long, Apple’s iPhones have dominated the luxury smartphone market. Huawei started making serious inroads into the luxury market for smartphones as far back as 2015, with its Huawei Mate S. That phone mimicked some of the iPhone’s features, such as a pressure touch screen. The trend continued with the Huawei Mate 10 in 2017, and now the Mate 20 Pro, released by Huawei in October, 2018.
Huawei Mate 20 Pro Design and Style
The Huawei Mate 20 Pro comes with classy, possibly even flashy, design. Take the screen, for example. This 6.39 inch screen, as measured by diagonal length, is larger than that of the iPhone XR also launched in 2018. The generous screen size complements the superlative design and aspirations of the Huawei Mate 20 Pro, which is one of the largest phones on the market. The screen has a slightly curved design at the edges to help take advantage of the ample real estate. On the back, its smooth surface is broken only by the small area near the top that contains three full cameras.
Mate 20 Features and Specifications
With 128 GB of storage, there is plenty of storage for everyday computing needs. The Huawei Mate 20’s storage can be expanded with a nano SD card to bring total capacity up to 256 GB. Combined with 6GB of RAM, this phone rivals laptops in computing capabilities. Huawei included in the Mate 20 Pro its AI-capable processor, the Kirin 980. If you wanted even more processing capabilities and high-end features, you could upgrade to the higher end of the Huawei Mate 20 product line. The Huawei Mate 20X and Mate 20 RS Porsche Design pick up where the Mate 20 Pro leaves off.
Comparison to iPhone XS
Android fans will be happy to know that there is now an Android phone with a 7nm processor to rival the iPhone a12 processor. This males the Mate 20 Pro a formidable challenger to the best that apple has to offer. Furthermore, the Huawei Mate 20 Pro comes with unique features that make it compelling even for someone firmly wedded to their iPhone. For example, the Mate 20 Pro’s 2-way wireless charging, a feature that remains just speculation for the iPhone product line at this point. With this innovation, the Mate 20 Pro is able to wirelessly charge other devices that take wireless charging, including other smartphones.
Is It Better Than Samsung Galaxy Note 9?
The Huawei Mate 20 Pro carries a higher price tag than the Samsung Galaxy Note 9, but not by a big margin, at $989 to $805. The Galaxy Note 9 is an all-round standout phone in the world of Android phones and boasts Samsung’s Snapdragon 845 processor. However, the Kirin 980 in the Mate 20 Pro is even faster than that, and uses its AI to enable things like taking photos even better than a professional photographer might be able to capture. The Galaxy Note 9 has a slightly bigger screen and bigger storage expansion up to 512 GB. On other features, however, the Mate 20 Pro stands its ground.
To Consider Before Your Purchase
A major downside to the Huawei Mate Pro is that it is not offered by any US carrier. This makes using it with your current phone plan a tricky proposition. In Australia and some other jurisdictions, there is official support for the phone. In addition, international buyers will need to check with retailers if the phone is covered under Huawei’s warranty.

- Fingerprint Unlocking: Fingerprint scan on the screen provides a second option for unlocking the phone.
What Do They Say on Other Sites
“Honestly the fastest and greatest phone I've ever had in my life. Its so quick and smooth - gorgeous and amazing. I was skeptical about buying a new phone from amazon, especially one this expensive BUT it came through nicely and I was amazed at how well packaged it came.” (Charlene, on Amazon)
“I ordered mine from NGP Store USA, and it has an LG screen with some greenish tint on the top-right side of the screen. It's only noticeable in the dark when the screen brightness is low and the background is grey (e.g. if you use dark theme at night time and auto-brightness is enabled).” (Matt, on Amazon)
